Following the PNG for Christ evangelistic program, churches in Papua New Guinea have faced the challenge of retaining newly baptised members. In response, New Britain New Ireland Mission president Pastor Andrew Opis has been conducting pastoral visits to train church leaders on discipleship and retention strategies.
From February 25-28, Pastor Opis visited Lasigi church in Konos District, New Ireland Province, where pastors, Volunteers in Action (VIA) and disciple-makers participated in retention training and evening worship meetings. The training focused on Bible study, preaching techniques, church visitations and leading Sabbath school classes.
Pastor Opis emphasised the importance of prayer and Bible study as essential elements of effective disciple-making. “God’s Word is a divine message, and we must understand it well to preach it effectively,” he said. “Prayer and Bible study are essential ingredients for spiritual growth.”
He also encouraged members to serve others with humility, reminding them that faith in Christ makes them part of God’s family.
Adventist health professional Conrad Stanis also presented on lifestyle diseases, covering topics such as oral cancer, diabetes, coronary heart disease, tobacco use and smoking cessation, concluding with a spiritual application.
Participants expressed appreciation for the training. Lay worker Walter Naigo noted that the focus on church visitations gave him a clearer understanding of his role in ministry. “This training has given me a fresh perspective on visitation and I now feel better equipped to serve,” he said.
Konos District director Pastor Mathias Sonny praised the commitment of those who attended, describing the training as “an opportunity to strengthen their faith and deepen their involvement in gospel work”.
