Around 700 Pathfinders from approximately 40 clubs took part in the Greater Sydney Conference (GSC) Pathfinder Fair at Castle Hill Showground on September 27.
Held every two years, the Fair gave Pathfinders an opportunity to put skills developed throughout the year into practice through activities and challenges based on the biblical story of Exodus.
One challenge involved teams creating an Exodus-themed mural on cloth before using wood and ropes to construct a frame for their artwork. Another required Pathfinders to use ropes to build a bridge. Other activities, including a cooking challenge, had been planned but were cancelled after heavy rain affected the program.
“A huge downpour swept in and some challenges had to be cut short,” explained GSC youth director Pastor Dejan Stojkovic. “But Pathfinders being Pathfinders, nobody gave up. Everyone pitched in, adapted and made the most of the moment.”
The event began with a parade and opening ceremony, which included a drum corps performance and a message presented by GSC secretary Pastor Cheonneth Strickland.
Hills Shire mayor Dr Michelle Byrne officially opened the Fair, “It’s fantastic to be here. I’m very impressed by what I’ve seen with the program,” she said. Dr Byrne also encouraged the Pathfinders to make the most of the opportunities the program provides.
“I hope you learn confidence, courage, determination, leadership skills and, most importantly, the importance of community service and community spirit,” she said.
A number of Adventist organisations and ministries were also represented at the Fair, including the Adventist Book Centre, Crosslands Youth and Convention Centre, ACA Health and Avondale University. Pathfinder clubs operated food stalls throughout the day to raise funds for their activities.
