Almost 500 Pathfinders from nine clubs took part in Popondetta District’s first Pathfinder fair in 25 years on September 20.

Held at the Papua New Guinea University of Natural Resources and Environment’s Popondetta campus oval, the event began with a parade from Doroins Park through Popondetta town.

The 483 Pathfinders were joined by local church leaders and representatives from the Northern and Milne Bay Mission.

Clubs competed in marching drills, pole building, knot tying, chariot and sack races, coconut husking and scraping, friction fire making and tug of war. District coordinators and Pathfinder leaders judged the activities.

Participating clubs were Bangoho, Double Cross, Igora, Inonda, Popondetta Town Church, Saiho, Sorovi, Tufi and Unity.

District Pathfinder coordinator Jones Kauna welcomed the turnout and said planning had begun for a larger gathering in 2027, with more advanced skills activities.

Campus director Dr Simon Urakowi, who approved the use of the oval, commended the clubs for their order and discipline and acknowledged the Church’s contribution to young people’s development.
