A total of 138 youth leaders and church representatives attended a week-long Master Guide and Training of Trainers (TOT) program held at Rulgi Prayer Centre in Papua New Guinea’s Western Highlands from May 10 to 16.

Held under the theme “Grounded in the Bible, Focused on the Mission”, the training aimed to strengthen youth leadership across the Western Highlands Mission (WHM) and introduce participants to the updated Master Guide curriculum.

The program was organised under the leadership of newly appointed WHM youth director Pastor Jimmy Aba. Facilitators travelled from the New Britain New Ireland Mission (NBNIM) to lead the training, including former NBNIM youth director Pastor Benis Kotoveke, alongside qualified Master Guide trainers Elaine Kotoveke and Florence Stoken.

“When you are grounded in the word of God, nothing will shake you,” Pastor Kotoveke told participants. “You can train others to know Jesus.”

Western Highlands Mission currently has 221 active Adventist Youth Ministries (AYM) clubs across seven provinces. Participants in the training included district and provincial AYM coordinators, pastors, district directors and area supervisors.

Training sessions covered topics including the revised Master Guide curriculum, AYM administration, drill and marching theory, recreation and workshop planning, alongside practical demonstrations.

Florence Stoken encouraged leaders to approach ministry with humility and a spirit of service. “A leader is always a servant,” she said.

Participant Jonah Toa, youth coordinator for Mendi District, said the training had helped refresh his understanding of youth ministry after many years of involvement in Master Guide leadership.

The Sabbath service during the training was led by WHM president Pastor Andrew Opis, who encouraged leaders to maintain Christ-centred ministry in local AYM clubs.

The event concluded with a dedication prayer led by WHM general secretary Pastor Edward David and the official launch of a Master Guide flag to be used across the mission. Participants also received certificates following the completion of the training.
