Landsborough church (Qld) commenced in a pineapple packing shed in 1948, 70 years ago. It moved from the packing shed to a private home, then to a public hall, then to a double garage on the present site of the church. On June 22, 1958, the original church was officially opened by the then Queensland premier Frank Nicklin.
The congregation continued to grow to the point where we needed to extend. To this end we “stretched” the church, adding four extra pews. Fast forward to 2000: growth in the church had continued and further extensions became necessary. This time the church was widened, adding seven additional pews, giving us seating for 160 people.
We have been served by around 30 ministers over the past 60 years. Our first minister, Pastor Rex D Edwards, now living in the US, has written a greeting for our church’s upcoming 70th anniversary celebrations.
Landsborough church has established five church plants around south-east Queensland. Three are still functioning well—Caloundra, Maleny and Kilcoy.
Over the years our church has reached out to the community in various ways: we are known as the “caring” church. The Sonshine Sanctuary was initiated by church members 25 years ago and has served the needs of domestic violence survivors. On a regular basis we assist Morris House, a local aid agency, and the Scripture Union chaplaincy program. We’ve presented “deliciously vegetarian cooking” demonstrations, engaged in nursing home visits, enjoyed community Mother’s/Father’s Day visits and presented a diabetic health clinic for the community. For many years we have exhibited at the annual Maleny Show. We have even purchased a vehicle for a family in need!
What of the future? Currently, we have plans before the local council for yet another extension. Maybe next time you visit, the work might have been completed.
If you have been a member of Landsborough or served as one of our ministers over the years or visited our church, why not come and celebrate how God has led and blessed us over the years on Sabbath, June 23? Celebrations commence at 10am, followed by lunch at 12:30pm, then an afternoon of memories at 2pm.
