Food As Medicine–Diabetes
Cooking to Prevent and Treat Diabetes by Dr Sue Radd

As soon as I heard of its release, I was eager to get my hands on the new Food as Medicine book by Dr Sue Radd. Working in the space of diabetes in the Pacific, with the 10,000 Toes Campaign, I am very aware of the negative impact that diabetes is having on society. It is alarming to note that since the pandemic, there has been a steep increase of type 2 diabetes in children, while at the same time a decrease in after-school activities.

Families are also struggling with the cost of living and more people are choosing cheaper processed food items to fill their supermarket trolleys, setting new norms of what meal times look like. But if we understood the impact these lifestyle choices were having on our lives, we would be empowered to adjust our lifestyle habits and learn ways that could have a more positive flow-on effects.

In a world were there is so much information and often conflicting thoughts on health and “diets,” it is a breath of fresh air to have not only an amazing illustrated cookbook but also one loaded with useful information.

In Food As Medicine–Diabetes, Dr Radd includes the latest research and understanding of diabetes and how a plant-based dietary pattern will benefit us. There is even advice on how to create a seven-day meal plan using the 50 new recipes in this cookbook, as well as the recipies in the original Food As Medicine book.

This is an amazing reference book, even if you never cooked a recipe, but I doubt you could resist the temptation to not try many of them. Food As Medicine–Diabetes has recipes for every occasion, from breakfast to your main meal and even a few “sweet ending” ideas to finish of that perfect meal.

So whether you are wanting to improve your own health or you’re cooking for a busy household and want to give your family a strong start to life, Food As Medicine–Diabetes is well worth exploring. Like Sue, I believe that to live well you need to eat well.
