Like a Mighty Stream
Trailblazing Women of the Reformation
by Sukeshinie Goonatilleke

Following the success of Sisters in Arms and As Bright as the Stars, author Sukeshinie Goonatilleke has given us another amazing collection of stories drawn from historical events from the time of the Reformation, a movement of men and women who fought for freedom to worship, follow their faith in God, and share and practice that faith.

Like a Mighty Stream includes stories over a period of about 300 years that come from the various European nations across which the Reformation spread. These are stories of 20 women of faith, who showed great courage, strength and determination, and whose faith compelled them to action, to stand and fight for what they believed in at a time when worshipping God openly in public was often not allowed in their communities of faith. Many of them were jailed and some gave their lives for their faith.

As you read through the book, you will discover that our sisters in faith sometimes lived and worked in very difficult conditions. While often lesser known in the stories of the Reformation, they stood together in faith, they served others in need and often played key supporting roles to the better known husbands or colleagues. At times, they also filled key leadership roles, even if unheralded. Most importantly, they stood strong for what they believed and their God.

If you are looking for a good read, I truly recommend Like a Mighty Stream. With 20 featured heroines, the stories are shorter than Goonatilleke’s previous volumes, yet together they give a clear picture of the faith and times of these women. This book will help you understand life in the time of the Reformers, inspire you to stand firm in your beliefs, strengthen your faith, and encourage spiritual growth. The stories of these courageous sisters will guide you through challenges and trials when your own faith is tested. Like a Mighty Stream and other books by Sukeshinie Goonatilleke are available from Adventist bookshops in Australia and New Zealand, as well as online.
