Of all cancers, thyroid has the highest five-year survival rate at 96 per cent, according to Cancer Council Australia. The disease is more common in women. Symptoms include a lump in the neck or throat, and difficulty breathing or swallowing. Cancer Council statistics show that in 2014, there were 133 deaths caused by thyroid cancer in Australia.
