The Grey Skirt
More Parables from My Life
By Danijela Schubert
Following on from the success of Dr Danijela Schubert’s previous book, The Green Dress, this new devotional book contains 52 more stories from her life of learning and service. Written in her warm and playful style, these stories draw lessons from the funny, the painful and the touching experiences of life. Each inspires trust in God’s faithfulness and paints a picture of One who holds you tenderly as you practise walking with Him.
As a scholar, teacher and leader, there are many topics Dr Schubert is qualified to write on, but her current focus on these stories tells us much about what she has found to be important in life. The stories in The Grey Skirt are remarkable not for the magnitude of the events they narrate, but for the example they provide of a Christian life lived thoughtfully and reflectively. There is much to distract us from this kind of life, and Dr Schubert’s stories show the value of making and taking time to notice the things God is trying to teach us through everyday experiences. This takes courage. It is not easy to look at the actions and interactions that make up our days and think about the inner thoughts and beliefs that might have motivated them—both in ourselves and others—but when done through the lens of God’s Word, this is the beginning of loving better and living with greater integrity.
Whether you read this book on your own or in community with others, don’t underestimate the value of thinking about and responding to the questions at the end of each reading. And perhaps take the time to begin to write down and share some of your own stories. You may not have tried to take a kitten for a swim or have faced death on a French mountain, but your stories are no less rich in spiritual lessons.
