Eleven new toilets were built by Seventh-day Adventist teachers in Port Moresby and Central Provinces during their third term break, September 25-29, in Central Province.
The specially made ventilated improvement pit (VIP) toilets were part of the community service efforts spearheaded by the education department of the Church’s Central Papua Conference (CPC). About 200 teachers from 17 Adventist schools joined forces to complete the project. VIP toilets were built in Hula, Hood Point High, Rilo and Kamali schools.
Apart from the schools, the teachers also built two toilets for the United Church pastors at Babaka, Irupara and the Hula health centre. The community was very appreciative as the completed toilets were handed over to them on the last day of the project. The project fostered a spirit of unity and common good between the Church and the communities.
Health and sanitation continues to be a challenge for most coastal villages and the VIP toilet program has been an improvement in recent times. The project was a continuation from the nearby Kalo Primary School’s fencing, well and toilet facilities, which were constructed in June.
CPC education director Peter Iga expressed gratitude to the teachers for sacrificing their third term break to improve lives of the villagers around Hood Point. Learning gained from the week will allow the teachers to continue similar initiatives in their own respective villages.
