Ilam Seventh-day Adventist Church in Christchurch, New Zealand, came alive with colour, song and celebration for its annual Cultural Day on Sabbath, September 27.

Members representing over 30 nationalities gathered in traditional dress, filling the sanctuary with a beautiful tapestry of languages, cultures and praise. The morning service featured Scripture readings, prayers and songs shared in multiple languages, reminding everyone of heaven’s promise that “every nation, tribe, people and language” will stand together before God (Revelation 7:9).

A special highlight of the service was the children’s flag parade, held as part of the children’s corner. With bright smiles and waving flags, the children proudly represented the 30 countries that make up the Ilam family. They followed their parade with a heartfelt rendition of “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands”, before listening to a children’s story that reminded everyone of God’s love for all people.

Clayton Mbofana shared an inspiring message titled “Who Is Invited?”, encouraging the congregation to see diversity as a divine gift that strengthens the body of Christ and to remember that everyone is welcome at God’s table.

Taste of the Nations was the theme of the vibrant shared lunch.

After worship, everyone gathered for a vibrant international shared lunch themed “Taste of the Nations”. The fellowship hall was filled with aromas and flavours from around the world—including island favourites, Asian delicacies, Caribbean dishes, and South American and African flavours.

The afternoon session continued with a concert featuring 16 musical items representing different nationalities within the church. The concert was followed by a panel discussion focused on how we share our faith and how we can break down barriers that sometimes divide us, highlighting the church’s commitment to inclusion and mission.

After the close of Sabbath, the day concluded with an evening of cultural and social-themed activities under the banner “Games Without Borders.” Members and guests joined in friendly competition, laughter and fellowship.

“Cultural Day at Ilam is more than an event—it’s a reminder that in God’s kingdom, our differences are not barriers but blessings,” said Jolene Anderson, head of the church social committee. “Together, the Ilam church family continues to reflect the beauty of heaven right here in South New Zealand.”
