Akwanja Adventist Church, under the Morobe Mission in Papua New Guinea, recently celebrated a week of joy and gratitude as members and guests gathered for the dedication and organisation of the church—the fulfilment of a long-awaited dream.
The Akwanja church story began in 1978, when pioneers Gerson Tinga, Solomon Andrew and Titus Mathias first embraced the Adventist faith. Walking nine kilometres to attend worship at Yakepa each Sabbath, they later built a small shelter in Akwanja to worship closer to home. The first missionary to minister in the area was Peter Iso, later supported by Kandra Pungu, who strengthened the believers in their spiritual journey.
Despite many challenges, the congregation persevered. In 2017, construction of the permanent church began under the skilled work of local carpenter Mathew Hikama. After years of dedication and sacrifice, the building was finally completed in 2025.
The celebration week was filled with worship, music and fellowship. Evening services were led by Pastor Kevin Pais, while morning devotions were conducted by dedicated ministers and pastors. On Tuesday, Pastor Pais officially dedicated the new church building, while Morobe Mission president, Pastor Kua Nugai, formally organised and prayed over the church and newly elected church leaders, giving both members and local leaders a strong sense of identity and mission.
The event was highlighted by the baptism of one new believer, symbolising the church’s ongoing mission to share the gospel. Members from surrounding districts, neighbouring churches and mission leaders joined in singing, thanksgiving and testimonies, creating an atmosphere of unity and celebration.
Reflecting on the journey, church members rejoiced in God’s faithfulness through 40 years of struggles and commitment. “The cries of the people of Akwanja have been answered by God’s grace,” one guest remarked.
Pastor Sam Ate, who currently serves as the church’s ordained pastor, oversaw the event. In his dedication message, Pastor Pais challenged members “to remain strong in the Lord and uphold His blessings.”
Closing the program, Pastor Nugai encouraged the congregation to work in unity with Kaiki church as a sister organised church, urging them towards self-reliance. He also consecrated the newly appointed leaders who will guide the church into the future.
