The Australian Union Conference (AUC) will continue to explore the practice of ordination after extended discussion at this week’s constituency meeting.

Ordination was one of four special focus areas on the agenda. Delegates were given a historical overview on the topic by South Pacific Division theologian Dr Darius Jankiewicz, followed by a question-and-answer session.

AUC president Dr Brendan Pratt noted that while conversations on the nature of ordination have progressed in some local conferences, others have yet to start. He emphasised the importance of more inclusive conversations.

“There are different perspectives—some calling for ordination without regard to gender, others seeking to review the biblical basis of ordination,” Dr Pratt explained. “Whatever path is taken, each option carries implications that require further consideration—ecclesiological factors, cultural contexts and unity with the world Church all need to be part of the discussion.”

He acknowledged the frustration many feel with the continued discussion on this topic over many years but stressed that the AUC is committed to progressing in a way that strengthens mission rather than distracts from it. “How do we wrestle with this together? How do we get this right in view of mission?” he asked.

Delegates were invited to consider the question, “In shaping our ordination conversation process, what factors does the AUC Executive need to consider?” Contributions from the floor highlighted the need for grassroots communication, accountability, timelines, educational resources and opportunities for every church member to engage. Recommendations included town hall meetings, forums and think-tanks to ensure a broad and inclusive process.

The AUC in 2021 affirmed its desire for equal recognition of all pastors—male and female—while maintaining unity with the global Church. More recently, four conferences—Victoria, Western Australia, South New South Wales and North New South Wales—called for a special session to discuss the practice of ordination, however, with the general session approaching, the matter was instead taken up at this week’s meeting.

Ultimately, the majority of delegates voted to broaden the conversation. The issue will remain on the AUC Executive Committee agenda as a key challenge item, with ongoing discussions planned across conferences and churches.

Melbourne pastor Jinha Kim was among a number of delegates who shared their views.
