A new book of short stories of women of the Reformation has led to a series of radio programs for Faith FM. Like a Mighty Stream is author Sukeshinie Goonatilleke’s third book of Reformation stories and features 20 short stories of women who championed their new-found faith and served others during difficult times.
“I was working on a series of articles on women in Christian history and I realised there were still so many stories that needed to be told,” Mrs Goonatilleke explained. “When I think about the times they lived in, how hard it was to be a woman, how marginalised they were, and how few opportunities they had, I’m always drawn to their stories. Couple that with the fact that, despite their circumstances these women still found ways to make a meaningful difference for Jesus in their communities—and I’m totally inspired.”
Published by Signs Publishing, the launch of Like a Mighty Stream has also inspired a new radio series, “Stories from the Reformation.”
“Faith FM contacted me to do a series on the Reformation and the most logical conclusion was to craft a series based on my new book,” said Mrs Goonatilleke. “The series explores the lives and times of the women I write about. I’m really enjoying scripting it and narrating the stories. It’s been an amazing way to bring them to life.”
Faith FM’s manager Michael Engelbrecht is excited about the new series that is being broadcast on the Adventist Church’s radio network and is also available for listening on demand. “As well as being a gifted author, Suki is a dynamic presenter with a storytelling ability that captures people’s imagination,” he commented. “Suki’s heart for Jesus shines through in her presentations—she is quick to see and to emphasise the practical connection these stories have in our everyday lives.
“I love the way she never misses an opportunity to invite listeners to let Jesus make a real difference in their own personal life,” he added.
As a follow-up to her popular earlier books Sisters in Arms and As Bright as the Stars, Like a Mighty Streamcomes with a simple message for Mrs Goonatilleke’s readers—and now listeners. “You can make a meaningful impact for Jesus, where you are, despite your circumstances,” she said. “You can use your gifts to uplift, inspire, challenge and shelter those who desperately need God’s love.” Like a Mighty Stream and other books by Sukeshine Goonatilleke are available from Adventist bookshops in Australia and New Zealand, or online.
