It was a heart-warming sight as more than 70 young men and women stood beside 15 original baptismal candidates in the Kipo settlement (East Boroko, Port Moresby) during a baptismal appeal on Sabbath, February 24.
The baptisms were the climax of a two-week revival meeting held outdoors in Kipo, featuring Pacific Adventist University fourth-year theology student Solomon Sanu as the guest speaker. With the theme “Come just as you are”, the church decided to bring the worship service to the community to share the wonderful gospel with friends and family as Pastor Sanu delivered the nightly messages.
Most of the community and church members are from the Kafe speaking tribes of the Eastern Highlands province, and witnessing in ethnic settlements is proving to be successful in most areas of Papua New Guinea.
Officiating in the baptism with Pastor Sanu was retired pastor and beloved church administrator John Amura, who shares close ethnic heritage with the Kipo community. The Kipo church’s newly baptised members were part of the special Bible study class under senior elder Maya Efu. Elder Efu was elated, and praised God for His faithfulness to the young people, saying the church is preparing for extra youth baptismal classes to cater for the growing interest in God’s Word, and plans are being made for another baptism in the fourth quarter of this year.
