Secondary students from Prescott College Southern (Morphett Vale, SA) recently received multiple awards for their performance at the National Wakakirri Competition 2019.
The students’ 7-minute story-dance won the State Award for Best Drama Story, as well as the National Entertainment Category Award, and also placed fourth overall for the Story of the Year Award.
Performing their story-dance entitled “It can wait!” on August 22, the students presented a community outreach piece to demonstrate the grim reality of using mobile phones while driving. The use of phones by drivers is a national concern and remains one of the top five causes of fatality on our roads.
Established in 1992, Wakakirri is Australia’s largest story-dance festival, involving more than 20,000 students across every state and territory each year.
Hundreds of schools across Australia create story-dances for Wakakirri each year that reflect their students’ thoughts, ideas and aspirations. These stories are performed in professional theatres in front of the official “Wakakirri Panel” who are searching for “Story of the Year”. Over 1 million people watch Wakakirri performances annually.
Head Judge Petra Gileson from the South Australian Division commended the students from Prescott College Southern for their honest and brave storytelling and their ability to deliver their message with passion, commitment and fabulous acting.
