Seventh-day Adventists across the South Pacific—and beyond—enjoyed a special Sabbath afternoon “appointment” on October 22.
They tuned in to The Great Appointment, a live program streamed from Avondale University Church and Sunnyside—Ellen White’s former home in Cooranbong, New South Wales. The program looked back at the Great Disappointment of 1844 and how that shaped the Seventh-day Adventist movement.
Viewers tuned in on Facebook and YouTube from Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and other parts of the South Pacific along with a number of countries outside the Division, including South Africa, United States, Philippines, Canada and Singapore.
Hosted by Avondale University students Rahel Gungadoo and Olivia Morton, The Great Appointment was engaging, interactive and full of variety. Among the highlights was a heritage drama live from Avondale University Church, written by first year theology student Hadassah Liebke. The Kahoot! quizzes were very popular, as was the launch of specially designed Heritage Heroes cards. Several Pathfinder groups tuned in to complete their Adventist History and Heritage honour.
Viewers expressed their appreciation for the program and how it provided an important reminder of the Church’s heritage.
“This presentation was so inspirational; the young people doing the re-enactments of our pioneers were absolutely wonderful,” commented Margaret Major on YouTube. “Thank you to every single person who helped in organising the whole day’s events. What a memorable day!!!”
Braden Oliver was also full of praise: “Great way to review our history, take courage for our present and look forward to our future in Christ. Thanks to the whole team!”
And from Daniel Vokurka: “Thank you so much for today’s program. It was truly inspirational and a wonderful tribute to the beginnings of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.”
The Great Appointment was an initiative of the South Pacific Division heritage department. SPD heritage director David Jones has begun working on concepts for 2023.
If you missed the program it’s still available for viewing on Adventist Media’s YouTube channel.
