A new book is sharing a road-tested resource for exploring, experiencing and personalising Adventist beliefs. 28 Stories was launched at the “Move With The Power 3” youth leadership summit in Brisbane, Australia. Published by Signs Publishing Company, 28 Stories is written by Pastor David Edgren, director of children’s ministry for the Victorian Conference.

28 Stories is a way of exploring our faith that begins with story and works through relationship and discussion to get to the teaching,” Pastor Edgren explains. “This includes what we think, what we feel, what we do, and how we see ourselves and God.”

First written for young people, the series of studies has already been used in various settings around Australia. The series of interactive devotional studies has been appreciated by people across a range of ages and faith experiences.

“My original intention was for it to be a refresher—perhaps for use some years after baptism—but it has also been used by younger people as a way of discovering Adventist beliefs in preparation for baptism,” reports Pastor Edgren. “It has also been used by groups of older people. My dad has a small group who has been using it and they have ended up spending two meetings on each of the stories because they have so much to share from their life and faith experiences.”

Pastor Edgren is the author of the “Adventures in the Bible” series for younger readers and is passionate about the value of storytelling for connecting faith with our lives. “We tend to think the Bible stories are ‘just for kids,’” he says. “We sometimes stop enjoying and exploring them as stories but stories can speak to us differently when we explore them in new ways.”

“I really believe that if we lose our story, we lose our identity,” Pastor Edgren explains. “That’s why 80 per cent of the Bible is stories and Jesus spent so much time telling stories. Stories become part of us and these become a foundation for our faith.”

28 Stories is a workbook for personal or group devotional study and is now available from Adventist Book Centres.
