The head of news and editorial of RECORD says he regrets publishing an Opinion titled “Low self-esteem with no depression.”

“Thank you for your letters and for sharing your concerns about the Opinion column published in RECORD on the topic of depression,” said Pastor Pablo Lillo.

I have written an apology, which will be printed in Record. I am also planning the publication of appropriate feature articles on depression written by Adventist health professionals who are well versed with the condition.

Many have said, even though it was an opinion—and therefore did not carry the full endorsement of the editorial team—it was inappropriate for publication on this occasion.

“As editor of RECORD I regret so many people have been hurt,” said Pastor Lillo.

“I have written an apology, which will be printed in Record. I am also planning the publication of appropriate feature articles on depression written by Adventist health professionals who are well versed with the condition.”

“I have learned through this issue that depression is very much taboo—both in society and in the church. It is time we—the church— sensitively and compassionately provide more open support, resources and assurances to those suffering and impacted by this debilitating condition.”

Anyone wanting to contact Pastor Lillo for further discussion can write to him at editor@record.net.au.
